She took two just to be sure. Both were positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was definitely scared,\u201d said Brooks, 23, who was uninsured. \u201cI was like, OK \u2026 I&#8217;m pregnant, so where do I go from here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until then she hadn\u2019t thought much about health care, but that changed when she found out that her daughter was on the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooks got that news last winter. The mix of joy, anxiety, and excitement she felt mirrors what many new parents feel at this time of year. Many Americans find out in January or February that they\u2019re expecting, because in the U.S., August has consistently high birth rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A growing body of research shows that prenatal care can make a huge difference to the long-term health of both the parent and baby. This is part of why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/5-key-facts-about-medicaid-and-pregnancy\/\">every state<\/a> offers health coverage to pregnant women who meet income requirements and might otherwise go uninsured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, Medicaid pays for more than 40% of births in the U.S. and an even higher percentage in rural areas, according to KFF. Pregnancy Makes You a Priority<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To sign up for government health care, you have to meet a number of requirements that vary widely by state. Most importantly, your income has to be below a certain threshold. In several states, most adults cannot qualify, regardless of income, if they\u2019re not disabled or the parent of a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the math is different for pregnancy. In Tennessee, for example, the eligibility cutoff in pregnancy is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/content\/dam\/tn\/tenncare\/documents\/eligibilityrefguide.pdf\">more than double<\/a> the income threshold for some other residents. So if you didn\u2019t qualify for Medicaid previously and are now pregnant, it\u2019s worth double-checking your state\u2019s requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\"><strong>2. Getting Covered Can Be Surprisingly Easy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply, you\u2019ll likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/medicaid-chip-insurance#:~:text=Your%20name%20and%20date%20of,insurance%20plan%20you%20currently%20have\">need to provide<\/a> proof of income, your Social Security number, and proof of residency. Brooks, an Illinois resident, told HealthQ that she found the sign-up process surprisingly easy. She learned about Medicaid from the provider at her initial prenatal visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey asked if I had insurance. I didn&#8217;t know anything at the time,\u201d she said. The nonprofit clinic gave her some phone numbers for the state Medicaid agency. She called and went to an in-person appointment to complete her application. She walked out of the office with coverage. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/state-health-policy-data\/state-indicator\/presumptive-eligibility\/?currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\">28 states<\/a>, pregnancy results in \u201cpresumptive eligibility,\u201d which provides immediate coverage \u2014 even without confirmation of the pregnancy \u2014 while the application goes through the approval process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\"><strong>3. Coverage Can Go Beyond Standard Medical Care<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medicaid provides all prenatal care at no out-of-pocket cost and usually a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/medicaid-postpartum-coverage-extension-tracker\/\">full year<\/a> of postpartum care. That\u2019s what happened to Brooks: Her appointments, medications, and delivery were free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>States cover dental, vision, and mental health care to varying degrees. Ashley Farrell, who lost her job when she was pregnant and applied to Medicaid in Georgia, said she received \u201crewards for going to your appointments,\u201d including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pshpgeorgia.com\/value-added-services.html\">grocery cards and a breast pump<\/a>. Benefits vary by state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\"><strong>People and Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some maternal health advocates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmhla.org\/articles\/the-one-big-beautiful-bill-act-obbba-and-its-impact-on-maternal-mental-health\">are worried<\/a> about how Medicaid cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act will affect pregnancy coverage.
